Hi,
Im Simon from Brisbane, Australia
For almost 10 years I have ran a company selling automotive parts of my own design but I got a little bored of this and wanted a new project where I could not just design functional mechanisms but make beautiful designs. This project started 2 years ago in 2023 with a lever espresso machine, there has been variations of this and I’m yet to choose the one to go to production but I do promise it will be very interesting. In manufacturing right now I have a conical bench top grinder, flat burr hand grinder, completely unique tamp and distribution tools ( I will show you soon, these seem worthy of a patent) . All have been designed with a disregard for manufacturing cost only focusing on the quality, finish, feel and should last for many lifetimes with basic maintenance. Wherever possible plastics are avoided for health and product longevity reasons. Although I am skilled in coding and electrical engineering all designs are as analog as possible, I like to think of it as what could have been made 100 years ago with good engineering, this is a far more interesting design challenge than fixing things in software. There will be no Bluetooth, wifi or apps there will be no warnings or reminders popping up on screens, there will be no screens. To me all of these are distractions which also inevitably shorten the life of the product.
Product one : Kinetic Concentric
83mm Conical Burr bench top hand cranked grinder.
The crank transmits power through a set of helical bevel gears to a shaft that travels through a torque tube that also supports the whole grinding assembly ensuring everything remains concentric and square. Burr adjustment is stepless and done by a top mounted dial very similar to a micrometer. The crank also drives a second set of gears that run a 450g stainless steel fly wheel at 6 times burr speed to help smooth out any tough beans. Construction is 316 stainless steel, 6061 Aluminum and wood.
Product two : More to the story soon ….
